With our <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Solar_System\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" class=\"external external_icon\">solar system<\/a> in the middle of our <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Galaxy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" class=\"external external_icon\">galaxy<\/a>, the Milky Way appears to us as a diffuse band of stars in the sky. Even early on, optical astronomers were able to take pictures of distant galaxies that had a distinct spiral structure, and with that, the question which shape our own galaxy has became pressing.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_col-sm-4 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"w-image align_none\"><a ref=\"magnificPopup\" href=\"https:\/\/www.astropeiler.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Milchstrasse_NASA_3.jpg\" aria-label=\"Milchstrasse_NASA\" class=\"w-image-h\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.astropeiler.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Milchstrasse_NASA_3.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"Milchstra\u00dfe (NASA public domain)\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/a><\/div><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p>NASA\/JPL-Caltech (author R. Hurt).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row height_custom\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols vc_row via_flex valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-12 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"g-cols wpb_row via_flex valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-12 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column us_custom_432d3f53\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p>In the early 1950s, measurements from the Dutch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.camras.nl\/\" class=\"external external_icon\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">radio observatory Dwingeloo<\/a> indicated a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spiral_galaxy\" class=\"external external_icon\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">spiral structure<\/a>, and this hypothesis was confirmed with data from Stockert.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the Stockert radio telescope was used in preperation for the American lunar missions: By observing the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thermal_radiation\" class=\"external external_icon\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">thermal radiation<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moon\" class=\"external external_icon\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Moon<\/a>, important conclusions about the surface properties of the Moon and suspicions of an extremely thin atmosphere could be drawn.<\/p>\n<p>A brief, if imprecise, overview of the work can be obtained from <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/\" class=\"external external_icon\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Google Scholar<\/a> with a query such as &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.de\/scholar?hl=de&#038;q=Stockert+radio+telescope+OR+observatory\">Stockert radio telescope OR observatory<\/a>&#8220;.
